THE STORY OF PIRATE CAPTAIN BARTY REDD From the History of Brinewind The Pirate Lords soon began reaping huge rewards from their investments. But one Captain Barty Redd loathed civilization resented any abridgment to his personal freedoms and longed for the fire and bloodshed of the past. Within a year of the signing of the Accords Captain Redd approached the Breonnese navy hoping to curry favor and earn himself a lucrative letter of marque by providing information about the town and the Consortium. His plan was to smuggle hundreds of heavily armed Breonnese marines within his own ships safely into the harbor. Once landed the Breonnese would overrun the town take the rival Lords prisoner and turn over the governorship to Barty. The Tombolos would either die attempting to flee or be captured and shipped back to Telluria for trial. Bartys scheming and paranoia ultimately proved to be his downfall. He was betrayed by his first mate Ginty McShaw. McShaw had approached Captain Redd demanding to be named captain of one of Redds ships once Brinewind was theirs. The increasingly paranoid Captain Redd became incensed by McShaws presumptuousness and ambition and had him viciously beaten by the crew before throwing him into the brig. Although nearly beaten to death McShaw escaped in a stolen longboat and made for Brinewind where he shared Captain Redds plan with the Consortium. He hoped this would earn him Bartys place at the Consortium table. When the Breonnese arrived in Brinewind they found the port still and the streets deserted. They found their way to the town plaza where the Lords crews waited for them. The unsuspecting Breonnese were massacred. Barty was taken prisoner and stood beside his first mate. The Accords were quite clear in the matter: a crewman who betrays his captain shall suffer a most grisly death. In this case McShaw would share Bartys fate. Barty and McShaw were lashed to an anchor and the waters around Rum Teat Bay were chummed. Captain Redd and McShaw were lowered into the water to be devoured inside out by ravenous hagfish. Their suffering did not go unnoticed by the dark powers of the Pelagrino: Captain Redd pledged his undying vengeance against all living things and was rewarded with undeath. He alongside his first mate became the first of Sons of Barty gruesome drowned corpses playing host to ravenous hagfish in their swollen bellies. These revenants target seaside towns and the crews of ships attempting to drag victims into the deep to make more of their kind.
